On the mat

Why train here
Whether you want to compete, get fit or simply learn to look after yourself, the structure is the same: clear fundamentals, good training partners and coaches who know your name.
Dedicated fundamentals classes every week cover the positions, escapes and submissions everything else is built on. No experience needed, and nobody is thrown in at the deep end.
Up to age 15, grouped by age and experience, with a kids’ belt system and clear expectations on effort, respect and looking after each other.
Head coach Sonny Weston is a black belt under Keith McKenzie, in the line of Ricardo and Leo Vieira. SWBJJ is independent: one curriculum, one grading standard, set here in Horsham, with a club team on Smoothcomp when you’re ready to test yourself.
Members book, cancel and join waitlists in the SWBJJ app, check in on arrival and see their belt, stripes and mat hours build up over time.
Waivers, parental consent and photo permissions are all handled digitally, and there is a named welfare officer to speak to in confidence about any concern.
3 open mats a week to put it all together: roll, drill, ask questions and get to know the people you’ll be training with for years.
New at the academy
The mat is still the heart of it. Around it, the academy has grown into a place to fight, stretch, recover and refuel.
Programmes
Every class on the timetable belongs to one of these programmes. Pick the one that fits and we’ll point you at the right first session.
Gi and no-gi classes for complete beginners through to competitors. Fundamentals classes teach the core positions, escapes and submissions; the main classes build on them with live training, and the no-gi sessions cover the wrestling and submission grappling that carry straight into MMA.
Small, age-grouped classes that build confidence, discipline and real self-defence skills. Children earn stripes and belts on their own kids’ belt system, and parents can follow their progress in the app.
Mini Vikings is jiu-jitsu for four to eight year olds: games, movement and the first positions, taught in short, lively sessions. Pay per class, so there is no commitment while they find their feet.
Unstructured mat time to put the week’s techniques together. Roll, drill or ask a coach a question: open mats are where the pieces click.
Horsham Muay Thai: pads, clinch, technique and conditioning for beginners and fighters alike.
Yin yoga on Thursday evenings: long, slow holds that open the hips and shoulders and undo a week on the mat.
Reviews
Great jiu-jitsu gym! I’ve been training here for almost a year and have already learned so much. The coaches are very experienced and the atmosphere is super friendly and welcoming. It’s especially great for women. There are women only classes to help build confidence when starting out. I’ve really been enjoying my time here and this gym is definitely the reason I caught the BJJ bug. Highly recommend! 💪
Completely new to BJJ and in my 50’s. Was initially nervous about starting but needn’t have worries, Sonny and his coaching staff have made me feel really welcome as have the other members. The atmosphere around the club is unique and I’m proud to be part of this community, couldn’t recommend highly enough
I have been a member of this club for over a year now and I just wish I had found it sooner. I am 34 years old and have never felt more welcome in any sport or community. Learning something so complex, humbling and physically commanding is never going to become boring for someone with an active mind and I couldn't recommend Jiu jitsu more. The fitness side of it is just a bonus. SWBJJ is 5* for me 💫
Amazing club, super friendly coaches and students. Great place to start for beginners as they offer white belt only classes through the week. Also great place for more experienced people as there’s a good amount of higher belts to work with and also learn from. Highly recommend for anyone that wants to get started on their journey🙌
Sonny has done an amazing job creating a club where everyone feels welcome. I was a bit hesitant at first because of the reputation some martial arts clubs have, but they have really gone the extra mile to make sure everyone has a good time and feels safe.
Sonny and the other coaches are super friendly and welcoming. The techniques that they teach are on another level. The vibe and atmosphere in the club is always positive and great to be around. I'm so happy to have found this hidden gem and call it my gym!
