Our story

From a few training partners to a full-time academy

SWBJJ started as a handful of training partners in Horsham and grew into a full-time academy on Blatchford Road: a big mat, a cage, a conditioning area and a café at the front.

Head coach Sonny Weston is a black belt under Keith McKenzie, in the lineage of Ricardo and Leo Vieira. The academy is independent: every class follows one curriculum set here, and our competition team is on Smoothcomp.

Kids and adults, complete beginners and competitors, gi and no-gi. Thai boxing with George Jarvis and Paulo Da Silva, yin yoga on Thursdays and a treatment room for sports massage.

Our emblem

A Nod to the Raven

The raven has long been admired for its intelligence, adaptability and resilience. Known for observing carefully, learning quickly and thriving in challenging environments, it symbolises qualities that extend far beyond physical ability.

At our club, the raven represents a commitment to continuous learning, strategic thinking and quiet confidence. It serves as a reminder that progress is built through patience, awareness and the ability to adapt when faced with challenges.

The Raven: BJJ Mindset

  1. Fear

    Enter the darkness

The Raven does not avoid darkness. It enters it.

Fear is information. Pressure, exhaustion, discomfort and uncertainty are not signs to retreat. They show us where we have yet to understand.

Do not run from fear. Study it.

  2. Intelligence

    Turn fear into knowledge

The Raven survives through intelligence, adaptation and awareness.

In BJJ, strength has limits. Knowledge multiplies. Every bad position contains information. Every tap teaches. Every opponent reveals something.

What we understand, we no longer need to fear.

  3. Transformation

    Change shape

The Raven is a symbol of transformation, of moving between darkness and light.

BJJ asks the same of us. When force fails, adapt. When the path closes, change direction. Become heavy, light, still, explosive. Yield without surrendering.

Do not insist on who you were. Become what the moment requires.

  4. Oversight

    Rise above

The Raven takes flight. From above, what seemed chaotic becomes visible as a whole.

With experience comes perspective: less panic, less ego, more patience. Eventually we stop merely fighting what is directly in front of us and begin to see patterns, possibilities and consequences.

Fear becomes knowledge. Knowledge becomes wisdom. Wisdom gives us wings.

Enter the darkness. Understand it. Transform within it. Rise above it.

What we stand for

How we run the room

Fundamentals first

Clear positions, escapes and submissions before anything fancy.

A proper kids’ programme

Age groups, a kids’ belt system and coaches who know every name.

Safeguarding built in

DBS-checked coaches, a named welfare officer and consent that parents control.

Everyone rolls

Complete beginners and competitors share the same mat and the same standards.

The building

Five rooms, one academy

Everything is under one roof on Blatchford Road, so a family can train, condition, recover and eat without getting back in the car.

  • A coach demonstrates a technique on the mat while the class watches

    The mat

A full-size competition mat for every class, from Mini Vikings to the Sunday no-gi, and the Thai boxing pads.

  • The cage

For MMA-style wall work, Thai boxing clinch work, self-defence sessions and fight-night events.

  • The strength gym: racks, bikes, a rower, a sled track and kettlebells

    The gym

Bars, kettlebells and conditioning space for strength work around training; parents of kids on a membership can add it on.

  • The café counter and a long bar of stools looking through a window onto the mat

    The café

Coffee, shakes and proper food at the front, before and after class, plus the shop.

  • The treatment room

Sports massage and recovery, booked at the desk.

Competition team

Test yourself when you’re ready

Nobody has to compete, but everyone who wants to is coached for it: a squad that travels together to local and national events, with the club team registered on Smoothcomp so sign-ups and results are in one place.

Great jiu-jitsu gym! I’ve been training here for almost a year and have already learned so much. The coaches are very experienced and the atmosphere is super friendly and welcoming. It’s especially great for women. There are women only classes to help build confidence when starting out. I’ve really been enjoying my time here and this gym is definitely the reason I caught the BJJ bug. Highly recommend! 💪

Completely new to BJJ and in my 50’s. Was initially nervous about starting but needn’t have worries, Sonny and his coaching staff have made me feel really welcome as have the other members. The atmosphere around the club is unique and I’m proud to be part of this community, couldn’t recommend highly enough

I have been a member of this club for over a year now and I just wish I had found it sooner. I am 34 years old and have never felt more welcome in any sport or community. Learning something so complex, humbling and physically commanding is never going to become boring for someone with an active mind and I couldn't recommend Jiu jitsu more. The fitness side of it is just a bonus. SWBJJ is 5* for me 💫

Come and see the room

The best way to understand the academy is one class on the mat. Tell us who is training and a coach will sort the rest.
